They needed every second of the game clock, but the Vincent Yellow Jackets came away from their Sept. 26 matchup with B.B. Comer victorious, taking a 23-20 win on the foot of eight grade kicker Zack Martin.

After a back-and-forth contest, the Jackets found themselves tied with the Tigers with 17 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. The Tigers fumbled the ball, however, and the Jackets recovered on the 16-yard line with just three seconds remaining.

With little time to run a standard offensive play, head coach Jason Hill said he turned to Martin.

“He was like a tiger,” Hill said. “I said, ‘Go get it.’”

Martin’s kick sailed through the uprights with no time left on the clock to give the Jackets their third-straight win on the season.

“We were very blessed,” Hill said. “B.B. Comer played hard. We made several key mistakes (and) let them hang around.”
Hill also said that he was proud of his team’s effort across the board, as the Jackets have been set back recently by injuries.

“We were down two linemen,” he said. “Our guys fought like warriors. I’m so proud Zack was able to put it through. It was such a hard-fought game, one of those you hate one team had to lose. We were very lucky, but our kids fought their guts out.”

Jace Green led scoring on the night, racking up three touchdowns on 97 yards rushing and 73 yards receiving. Jacorey Roper posted 128 passing yards and 57 yards on the ground in the win.

The win puts the Jackets at 3-2, and they now move on to face Thorsby High in a road contest Oct. 3.
