BIRMINGHAM — For three quarters the game was even, but the Minor Tigers ran away from the Briarwood Christian Lions in the fourth quarter as the Tigers pulled out the 30-12 win.

The game was tied at 12 going into the fourth quarter, but Minor’s rushing attack, along with a couple of big plays, proved to be too much for the Lions.

Minor scored the first two touchdowns of the game to go up 12-0 in the first half (missed both two point conversions). Quarterback Haywood Spencer ran for a 23-yard touchdown and running back David Mitchell scampered for two yards to capture the second score.

However, Briarwood cut the lead to 12-7 as quarterback Walker Lott hit Kolby Kwarcinski for a 39-yard touchdown with 1:15 left to go in the half.

Midway through the 3rd quarter, Briarwood scored on a safety caused by a bad snap passed the punter to cut Minor’s lead to 12-9.

Briarwood kicker Samuel Parker would later tie the game at 12 with a 27-yard field goal to end the 3rd quarter. It was the last points Briarwood Christian scored on the night.

From that point on, Minor took over the game. Spencer connected with Delonte Evans for a 54-yard touchdown pass, giving Minor an 18-12 lead. The two-point conversion failed.

With 3:56 to go in the game, Minor put the dagger into BCS. Spencer threw another touchdown to Jaylond Adams for 72 yards to give the Tigers a 12-point lead.

Lott threw an interception to Minor’s Maurice Smitherman with a little over two minutes to go in the game, sealing it for the Tigers. Running back Cory Calhoun scored Minor’s final touchdown of the game with less than 2 minutes to go.

Minor did not convert a single PAT on the night.

Lott went 7-of-18 for 123 yards with a touchdown pass and three interceptions on the night. Lott also ran for 79 yards on the ground.

Minor quarterback Haywood Spencer went 15-of-22 for 237 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Spencer also added 69 yards rushing. RB David Mitchell also had 6 rushes for 60 yards, averaging 10 yards per carry.

BCS fell to 3-5 on the season and will face another road test at John Carroll Catholic next Friday at 7pm.

Minor improved to a 6-3 record and will host Pelham next Friday at 7pm.
