Local school board members honored by state association

Several school board members from Shelby County have been practicing what they preach over the past several months and years, as they have been recognized for attending the state’s school for school board members.

Multiple members of the Shelby County, Pelham city and Alabaster city school boards will be among the 52 central Alabama school board members to be recognized for their efforts to improve their boardmanship skills, increase their understanding of education issues and heighten their leadership skills by participating in the Alabama Association of School Boards School Board Member Academy.

During the AASB’s annual awards luncheon on Dec. 5 at the Hyatt Regency Birmingham – The Wynfrey in Hoover, the following local school board members will be honored for completing various levels of training through the academy:

-Alabaster Board of Education member Linda Church (Level I – At least 25 hours of training)

-Pelham Board of Education member Paul Howell (Level I – At least 25 hours of training)

-Pelham Board of Education member Dr. Barbara Regan (Level I – At least 25 hours of training)

-Shelby County Board of Education member Jimmy Bice (Level II – At least 50 hours)

-Alabaster Board of Education member Dr. John Myrick (Level II – At least 50 hours)

-Alabaster Board of Education member Derek Henderson (Level I and II)

-Alabaster Board of Education member Adam Moseley (Level I and II)

-Shelby County Board of Education member Peg Hill (Master – At least 115 hours and nine core courses).

“It is such a pleasure to see our members invest in their development as school board leaders,” AASB President Katy Campbell of the Macon County school board wrote in a news release. “These school board members know the importance of growing and learning to improve their leadership skills. They know students perform better when their school systems are led by highly effective school boards.”
