PELHAM—Take a step back in time with Dr. Mike Mahan as he reads and discusses his book, “No Hill Too High for a Stepper: Memories of Montevallo, Alabama,” at the Pelham Public Library on Jan. 17 at 2 p.m.

Mahan’s book, written with Norman McMillan, recalls his childhood and adolescence as the son of a barber and beautician in Montevallo during the Great Depression and ensuing years, Pelham Public Library Adult Services Coordinator David Smith said.

“It’s the life of a country, small-town boy,” Mahan said of his book. “I was lucky enough to grow up in Montevallo where there is a university. I was able to participate in so many wonderful things as a kid.”

During the Jan. 17 reading and discussion at the Pelham Public Library, Mahan said he and his wife will read selections from the book and he will expand on them, recalling stories and the impact of certain experiences on his life.

Smith said Mahan’s book was recommended to him by a patron. After reading the book himself, Smith said he reached out to Mahan asking him to present at the library.

“I really enjoyed reading (Mahan’s book),” Smith said. “It’s a really well written book.”

Mahan’s presentation and book reading is free to attend, but reservations are encouraged as seating is limited.
