Oak Mountain and Spain Park compete in Heart of Dixie wrestling tournament

The Spain Park and Oak Mountain High School wrestling teams participated in the Heart of Dixie tournament on Dec. 29 and 30 at Vestavia Hills High School. Oak Mountain placed third out of the 14 teams that competed, while Spain Park placed 13th.

For both programs, there were stellar individual performances. Looking at Spain Park, Leon Strong placed third in the 152-pound weight class, scoring 59 total points for his team and winning the consolation third place match over Cooper Roberts of Buford County. Kevin McClure finished second overall in the 195-pound weight class, scoring 70 total points before losing a tiebreaker in the first place match. Taylor Cox finished 10th in the 220-pound weight class, scoring 12 points total.

Oak Mountain also had many productive performances from its team. Michael John Harris, who won the 132-pound weight class in convincing fashion and scored 74 team points in the process, highlighted those performances. Alex Thomas placed second in the 106-pound weight class, as did Coleman Reeves in the 152-pound class. Rounding out Oak Mountain’s impressive tournament were third places finishes by Kenny Krishak and Armond Lloyd, of the 182-pound and 285-pound weight classes, respectively.
