COLUMBIANA–The city of Columbiana will host a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 10 a.m., to mark the beginning of construction for the new Columbiana Senior Center on Mildred Street.

The groundbreaking, hosted by the South Shelby Chamber of Commerce, will celebrate the new 4,300-square-foot multi-purpose facility that features a dining lounge, computer and library room, multi-purpose room for arts and crafts, conference room and commercial grade kitchen.
Columbiana Mayor Stancil Handley said he is excited to bring the senior residents of Columbiana something they can be proud of.

“Finally! This senior center has been a dream for many years for the residents of Columbiana and they have been very patient and understanding,” said Handley. “I’m very grateful to Shelby County and the state of Alabama for assisting Columbiana in funding this project.”

The new senior center will be located across the street from City Hall in what used to be the Shelby County Health Department building.

“The new multipurpose senior center will provide our seniors the activities and resources they deserve,” said Handley. “As one of my administration’s committed capital projects, this is another example of the city of Columbiana we are working every day to build.”
