COLUMBIANA – A 20-year-old Alabaster man facing robbery and assault charges remains in the Shelby County Jail after a judge recently denied a request to lower his bond.

Justin Edward Catlin, who lists an address in the 500 block of 13^th Street Southwest in Alabaster, is scheduled to appear in the Shelby County Courthouse for a status call on Feb. 2 at 8:30 a.m., according to court documents.

In March 2014, a grand jury indicted Catlin on felony charges of first-degree robbery, first-degree burglary and second-degree assault. Catlin was arrested by the Alabaster Police Department on Nov. 20, 2013, and charged with the three crimes.

The arrest came a few days after Catlin allegedly assaulted a homeowner on Bare Tree Drive in Alabaster during a Nov. 16 robbery at about 1:05 p.m., Alabaster Police Chief Curtis Rigney said previously. The victim in the case suffered non life-threatening injuries in the incident, and was treated and released from Shelby Baptist Medical Center.

According to the indictment and police incident reports and Catlin’s arrest warrant, Catlin allegedly entered the victim’s residence armed with a pistol and stole a wallet containing about $325 and a cell phone from the victim.

After investigating the incident, Alabaster police located Catlin in Birmingham and arrested him on Nov. 20, Rigney said.

Catlin’s attorney submitted a request in September 2014 to allow Catlin to post a $3,500 bond from the Shelby County Jail, but the request was denied by Circuit Court Judge Dan Reeves. The suspect has remained in the jail on bonds totaling $70,000 since his arrest.
