MONTEVALLO– Behind 29 points from All-American Troran Brown, the University of Montevallo men’s basketball team remained on top of the Peach Belt Conference’s West Division, defeating Georgia College by the final score of 87-74.

Each team had a hot start to the contest, making the majority of the shots attempted. At halftime, each side actually had a higher shooting percentage from three-point territory than the field.

Brown was the leading scorer for the Falcons in the first half, scoring 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc.

Nearly matching Brown was Georgia College’s Dwight Anderson. Anderson was 3-for-5 from distance and added an additional two field goals for 13 points in the first 20 minutes.

It was just a one point game at the half, with Montevallo holding a slim 44-43 lead.

In the second half, UM was able to pull away from the Bobcats by maintaining their torrid pace. Brown connected on three of his four attempts from deep in half number two for a season-high eight three-pointers in one game.

The reigning Peach Belt Player of the Year scored 29 points overall and also led the team in assists, five, and steals, two.

Montevallo shot above 50% from three-point range in each half, while the Bobcats shot 66.7% in the first half, but failed to hit a three in the second half.

Georgia College shot 63% from the floor in the first half, but made just 33.3% of their shots in the second half.

The 87-74 win from the Falcons comes off a strong performance from Brown and a balanced attack from the rest of the team.

Senior Shykeem Jackson finished the game shooting over 70% and had 13 points.

Senior Ryan May and junior Malik Fields had matching 11 point and five rebound stat lines. May did most of his work from beyond the arc, shooting 50% from three-point distance. Fields, on the other hand, dominated down low in the second half, scoring all of his points after halftime and shooting 66.7% from the field.

Off the bench, both Ibrahim Johnson and Bryant Orange were solid. Johnson scored 10 points and had eight boards in relief, shooting over 80% from the floor.

Orange chipped in nine points and also had four assists, the second most on the team.

The Peach Belt Conference’s leading rebounder, Larry Slaughter, again had double digit rebounds, grabbing 11 boards in the win.

Montevallo (9-6, 5-0) will finish out their three game homestand this Saturday, January 10, against UNC Pembroke.

The game will tip-off at 3:30 p.m.
