Fine Folk Art II Gallery Exhibit

Sometimes whimsical, sometimes intriguing, but definitely unconventional, Folk Art does not usually conform to customary rules in art.

It is a craft that is perpetually changing with each generation, and one that displays the heart and value of our culture today.

Folk Artists might incorporate everyday objects from the community, family or geographic location as a backdrop for their work.

The Fine Folk Art II Gallery Exhibit opens Friday, Jan. 16, from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Shelby County Arts Council with Teresa Wamble as the guest curator.

Teresa, originally from West Tennessee, currently resides in Birmingham where she paints and designs gourds, a medium she chose for its versatility.

Her work is inspired by Native American designs and nature.

“Many people don’t do the art circuit and would never see these works,” says Wamble regarding the upcoming exhibit. “As long as I get to be the curator, I want to introduce totally new artists each year.”

Wamble and the Arts Council designed this exhibit to give new folk artists the opportunity to show their work and gain exposure.

This year’s exhibit will feature Mary Ann Casey, Maurice Cook, Dianna Hiott, Linda Holt, Scott McQueen, Anthony Tavis and Teresa Wamble.

Come see the Fine Folk Art II Exhibit to enjoy artwork that contains thoughtful originality and ideas, rich with history, that have passed from generation to generation.

The opening reception on Jan. 16 will be accompanied by music, food and wine.

The Exhibit will remain open until Feb. 20.
