Pelham Panthers cage the Briarwood Lions

North Shelby- The Pelham High School boys basketball team took on the Briarwood Christian Lions in an exciting game on Friday night, Jan. 16.

The defense for both teams started out strong and the Lions were all over Pelham’s Alex Reese and Zach Allison. Reese scored five points for the Panthers in the first quarter. Allison and Morgan Sharp put up three points for the Panthers followed by Mason Whitman with two points.

The Lion’s Thomas Collier put four points on the board accompanied by Carson Donnelly and Pierce Merry with four points, Justin Brown with two points and Drew Bonner with one point.

The first quarter ended in a tie 13-13.

Brown led the way for the Lions in the second quarter, scoring eight points accompanied by Collier with three points.

The Panthers’ struggled in the second quarter, with Reese scoring five again and J.T. Kepler scoring one.

At the end of the second quarter the Lions led 24-19.

The third quarter was fast paced but low scoring for the Panthers. Allison put up five points, all of which were free throws. Reese and R.J. McCall both scored two for the Panthers.

Jeff Travis and Will Roden scored five points each for the Lions in the third quarter. Brown and Merry scored two points each for the Lions in the third quarter.

The third quarter ended with the Lions in the lead, 38-28.

The fourth quarter was a big quarter for the Panthers. With 7:32 left in the game, Mitchell Rottier scored a three that sparked a hot streak for the Panthers. Rottier scored another three points immediately after. Rottier scored a total of 11 points in the fourth. Allison scored four, Reese Scored three and Kepler scored one for the Panthers in the fourth.

The Lions struggled in the fourth only scoring nine points bringing the score at the end of the fourth to 47-47 and the game went into over time.

Brown put up four points for the Lions and Collier scored three bringing the Lions to 54.

Pelham’s Allison scored seven points in overtime, followed by Rottier with three and Reese with two.

The final score of the game 59-54 in favor of the Panthers.
