James “Mickey” Henson, age 68, died Jan. 22 at Shelby Medical Center after a brief stay.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 25 at Bolton Funeral Home–Shelby Memory Gardens in Calera. Burial will follow in Shelby Memory Gardens. Visitation will be from noon-1 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 25 at Bolton Funeral Home-Shelby Memory Gardens.
He was one of three children born to the late Doris Askins Henson and the late Jesse Albert Henson in Calera, May 15, 1946. Following graduation from Montevallo High School, Mickey spent approximately a year with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C.
Upon returning to Wilton, Mickey worked at Times Printing Company where he began his life long career in printing. After leaving Times Printing, he began working at Commercial Printing Co. in Birmingham. In 1967, he married Geraldine “Jerrie” Crawford. Mickey’s family moved to Wilton when he was nine years old where he has continued to reside for 59 years.
Mickey is survived by a son, Joseph “Joey” Henson, and a daughter, Margaret Rebecca Sides, (Kenny).
He is survived by three grandchildren, Joseph “JoJo” Henson, Haley Ann Pourciau and Ava Lilly Sides. Mickey has two sisters, Billie Sue Glasgow of Alabaster and the late, Jessica Rebecca “Doopy” Lippeatt. Mickey has numerous cousins and special friends, and his beloved miniature dachshund and companion of 15 years, KoKo.
Mickey’s love of politics led him to run for councilman in his hometown of Wilton in 1972.  During that four-year term, he was appointed mayor. In 1976, he ran for mayor and was elected consecutively for the next three terms. Accomplishments that Mickey as most proud of consisted of the water system and paving the streets in Wilton.
Mickey has always had a passion for cars, his first being a blue ’57 Chevy.  Also, his hobby of building and collecting model cars was phenomenal. Mickey’s gift of salesmanship, his smile and sense of humor in everything he did, and service to not only God but to all whom he came in contact was some of the extraordinary qualities he possessed.
