FROM STAFF REPORTS

ALABASTER – On Nov. 23, 2014, the Psi Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. created safety bags for each classroom at Thompson Middle School.

Chapter members were taught the basic points of the recently adopted ALICE safety program, local school fire and tornado procedures and worked together to create a “Go Kit” in order to aid classroom teachers in the event of a school emergency.

The items for the kits were bought with funds raised from the sorority’s fundraising efforts, as well as sponsorships from local companies such as Lhoist North America and Martin Safety Solutions.

Items in the bags included a first aid kit, ChemLights, a whistle, a high-visibility safety vest from Lhoist North America, disposable gloves, armbands for medical recognition and workman’s gloves from Martin Safety.

The bags were distributed to the teachers of Thompson Middle School following their final ALICE training session on Jan. 5th.

The Psi Xi Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. strives to provide service to all mankind throughout the Shelby County Area on a consistent basis.
