HELENA–The city of Helena has been monitoring the weather situation and if things take a turn for the worst overnight, Helena police, fire and street crews are ready to take action.

Helena Mayor Mark Hall addressed the city council on Monday, Feb. 16, and said the crews have been on call through the weekend to take action if called upon.

“Everyone is just in standby mode,” said Hall. “We started preparation Friday with our police, fire and street crews and what they’ll do is load up different trucks for different areas. We brought in six loads of gravel that’s really fine almost like sand that we can put on bridges or roads.”

Citing the Helena Police Twitter page, Helena Police encourage citizens to use caution if driving.

“If you must drive tonight, use caution. Chance of ice developing on bridges and isolated roadways in the Birmingham area,” read the tweet.

Shelby County Schools will operate on a two-hour delay for Tuesday, Feb. 17.
