Schools delaying start on Feb. 17

The Shelby County, Pelham, Alabaster and Hoover school systems will start school two hours later than usual on the morning of Feb. 17.

The school systems cited frigid early morning temperatures as the cause of the delay.

Jefferson State Community College will delay start until 10 a.m.

Hilltop Montessori School in Mt Laurel will delay start until 10 a.m. and will reschedule its parent education series to a later date, according to an email sent to parents.

Indian Springs School also will delay the start of the school day until 10 a.m. ISS buses will run two hours later than normal.

School buses will run two hours later than usual on Feb. 17 and breakfast will not be served. Schools will operate on a regular schedule after the delay.

According to the National Weather Service in Calera, Shelby County will see a high of only 39 on Feb. 17, and early morning temperatures will hover in the mid-20s.

In a special weather statement issued on Feb. 16, the Weather Service warned of potentially hazardous travel conditions overnight and early on Feb. 17 as roadways, bridges and overpasses may become slick with black ice.
