Shelby County students recognized for ACT Student Readiness Award

COLUMBIANA–Students representing high schools throughout Shelby County were recognized on Thursday, Feb. 19, at the Shelby County Board of Education meeting for their successes in the classroom and performance in relation to the ACT’s College Readiness benchmarks in English, mathematics, reading and science.

The students nominated were Aidan Ryan of Calera High School, Tanner Sulser of Chelsea High School, Grant Beard of Helena High School, Gregory Spence of Montevallo High School, Chase Stiffler of Oak Mountain High School, Virginia Mack of Shelby County College & Career Center, Emily Somer Hall of Shelby County High School and Keenan Wallace of Vincent High School.

Each high school was asked to select one exemplary student who embodies successful readiness for college and career.

Out of these nine students, one student was selected to represent to compete at the state level in March.

Spence of Montevallo was chosen as the representative for the Shelby County School System.

Some of Spence’s accomplishments include Vice President of the National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta, Student Government Association, yearbook editor, chess club, cross-country and soccer teams, MHS Student Body President and more.

If Spence is chosen to receive the national Student Readiness Award, ACT will cover travel expenses to Washington, D.C. to be recognized at ACT’s National Gala on College and Career Readiness held on June 9.
