Martha Shelnutt Dillard, born April 22, 1938 in Atlanta, Ga., passed away March 6, following an inspirational 8-1/2 year battle with cancer. She died comfortably in her home, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

Marti devoted her life to others, serving as a volunteer for various groups throughout her children’s activities and as a charter member of Valleydale Baptist Church. She remained an active member of Valleydale Church, devoting special attention to the Grace Sunday School class. She also volunteered at Heardmont Senior Center in several different capacities.
She served for 12 years on the Shelby County Board of Registrars and worked as a realtor for ten years with Johnson, Rast and Hays Realty Co. She was an entrepreneur and operated her own antique and gift shop, The Holiday House, for several years in Pelham.
She is preceded by her parents, Wilburn and Opal Shelnutt.
She is survived by Larry, her husband of 57 years; her daughter, Susan Phillips (David) and two sons, Chip Dillard and Clint Dillard (Amy); as well as her five grandchildren, Taylor and Bailey Phillips and Jack, Liz and Sam Dillard. She is also survived by her sister, Robbie Ann Upshaw (Calvin); her sisters-in-law Guynelle Bird and Jackie Dillard; and seven nieces and nephews, along with numerous cousins and dear friends.
The funeral service was held at the former site of Valleydale Baptist Church, now the campus of Southeastern Bible College at 2545 Valleydale Rd. Birmingham, AL 35244 on Tuesday, March 10 with Dr. Paul Moore officiating. The family greeted friends prior to the service from 9-11 a.m. in the Sanctuary of Southeastern Bible College (Building B), with the memorial service beginning at 11 a.m. in the Sanctuary. Private burial followed at Southern Heritage Cemetery.
