PELHAM—Spring has arrived and the Pelham Public Library is offering the perfect program to get your garden ready for the season.

On April 13 at 6 p.m., the library is holding an organic gardening class. Led by Regional Extension Agent Nelson Wynn, the program will cover the basics of growing vegetables, methods of organic fertilization and tips for non-chemical-based pest control.

“They’ll learn to identify beneficial insects and how to protect those insects,” Wynn explained, adding he will also cover topics such as composting and gardening tips.

Funded by the Pelham Public Library’s Smart Investing @ Your Library grant from the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and the American Library Association, the program offers families a money-saving solution to purchasing often-expensive organic groceries.

“Buying organic vegetables at the supermarket is very expensive, this is one way you can save,” Pelham Public Library Adult Services Director David Smith said. “It’s also healthier for you if you grow them organically.”

The library will also provide free tomato, string bean and lettuce seed packets at the April 13 event.

The event is free and open to “anyone interested in gardening,” Smith said.
