ALEXANDER CITY – Three days after Briarwood hung an unprecedented 44 runs in two games over a hapless Woodlawn team, the Lions took the field again in the first day of the Spring Break Tournament the team is participating in and won their opening pair of games on March 30 against Russell County and Beauregard, respectively.

Game 1. Briarwood 8 – Russell County 4.

The Lions jumped on Russell County early in the contest, and led 3-0 after the first inning via back-to-back home runs on successive pitches by Pierce Merry and Harrison Cain. Merry hit a bomb over the center field wall in the fourth pitch of his at-bat, which also scored Jake Morris who had been on first base before Cain stepped to the plate and promptly hit the first pitch he saw sailing over the right field fence. From that point the Lions never trailed. One more run in the second and four more runs in the fourth brought the run tally to eight.

Luis Fuentes started on the mound for Briarwood and was relieved after 4.1 innings by Cain, who pitched the last 2.2 in scoreless fashion. Fuentes threw 77 pitches from the mound and gave up five hits and four runs to Russell County.

Game 2. Briarwood 2 – Beauregard 1.

The second game of the day was closer than the first. Trey Mitchell stepped up to the mound to start the game for the Lions and never relinquished his post. Mitchell threw a complete seven inning, 86-pitch game in which he gave up five hits, struck out five batter and only relinquished one hit.

The Lions scored the first run of the game in the top of the first inning. Morris singled with one out and as followed by Merry, who was walked to put the runners on first and second. Two batters later Carson Cupo smacked a single to right field and Morris was able to come home to plate the first run of the game. Two innings later Briarwood added another run, and behind Mitchell’s arm were able to hold on to the win.
