John Thomas “Jack” Greggs III
Shelby

John Thomas “Jack” Greggs III, 67, passed away Sunday, March 29, 2015.
The Richmond, Va. native moved to the Birmingham area in the 1980’s, residing in Helena, and was an active member of Helena United Methodist Church. He returned to Birmingham in 2003, living in Calera before moving to the LaCoosa area of Lay Lake in Shelby.
Jack traveled throughout the southeastern United States during his 38 years in the commercial truck tire business. Later, he owned and operated a Snap-on Tools franchise before retiring full-time to Lay Lake.
Retirement was anything but a time for rest and relaxation. Jack remained energetically industrious, spending countless hours repairing his and neighbors’ boats when he wasn’t fishing.
He and his wife, Becky, volunteered for Boykin Spaniel Rescue, enabling them to develop many lasting friendships with dog owners nationwide. The Greggs fostered several Boykins in their home, but none compared to Jack’s constant companion, his adopted Boykin rescue “Bear.”
Jack was predeceased by his father, John Thomas Greggs Jr.
Survivors include his mother, Anne Jordan Branch (James); his wife of 12 years, the former Rebecca Rinehart; daughters, Melanie Greggs Henderson (Richard) and Jenni Greggs McDuffie (Jason); one son, Tommy H. Greggs (Caroline); stepdaughters, Molly H. Hardin (Marty) and Ellery H. Freeman; stepson, Andy Heis (Leah); sister, Patricia Greggs Clevinger; brother, Christopher P. Greggs; nine grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
The family will have a private celebration of Jack’s life at a later date.
Memorial gifts may be made in Jack’s memory to his passion, Boykin Spaniel Rescue, at Boykinspanielrescue.org.
