CALERA–On Wednesday, April 1, at approximately 3 a.m. Calera Police responded to a call in the Waterford subdivision, in reference to a report of a domestic disturbance according to a Calera Police Department press release.

Once on scene, officers were advised that the alleged suspect fled the scene on foot prior to their arrival.

Shortly after officers’ arrived on scene, A Shelby County Sheriff’s Deputy on patrol in the area of CR 70 near the entrance of the subdivision, reported that his vehicle struck a pedestrian.

Further investigation revealed the pedestrian struck was the alleged suspect involved in the domestic investigation.

The suspect was transported to UAB hospital and is reported to be in stable condition, pending a psychiatric evaluation.

After further investigation, Calera detectives signed a warrant against the suspect for the charge of willful abuse of a child.

The suspect is identified as 25-year-old Darryl Alan Smith of Calera.

Once formally charged, Smith will be held in the Shelby County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
