Montevallo men’s track and field finishes third in BSC event

BIRMINGHAM – The University of Montevallo men’s track and field team finished third in an eight-team field at the Birmingham-Southern College Twilight Invitational event April 3.

The Falcons finished third in team standings behind event champion Samford and host Birmingham-Southern College.

Sophomore Darrius Woody claimed the 800-meter run individual title with his time of 1:58.85, which placed him more than one second ahead of runner-up finisher John Russell of Spring Hill. Freshman teammate Michael Johnson came in third overall in the event with a time of 2:00.66. Junior Chris Pirrello finished fifth in the event with a time of 2:05.06.

Sophomore Donny Barnes won the 5,000-meter run individual title with his time of 15:01.57, which placed him nearly 17 seconds ahead of runner-up finisher Christopher Roberts of Birmingham-Southern. Sophomore teammate Jordan Strong finished fourth overall in the event with his time of 16:27.86.

Junior Leroy Moore finished second overall in the 100-meter dash with his time of 11.09 seconds, just 0.02 seconds behind first-place finisher Shelby Campbell of Samford. Moore also finished second overall in the 200-meter dash with his time of 21.92 seconds, just 0.06 seconds behind Frederick Harris of Concordia.

Pirrello also finished fifth overall in the 3,000-meter steeplechase event with a time of 10:33.55.

Freshman Alex Knight finished runner-up to Chris Thrasher of Samford in the pole vault competition with his attempt of 13 feet, 3.50 inches, just under two feet behind Thrasher.

Freshman Caine Robinson finished third overall in the high jump competition with his leap of 6 feet, 0.50 inches. Robinson also finished fifth overall in the triple jump competition with is leap of 41 feet, 10.75 inches.

The Montevallo entry in the 1,600-meter relay event finished runner-up to Concordia with a time of 3:39.71. The Falcons’ entry in the 400-meter relay event came in fifth overall with a time of 44.74 seconds.
