Local middle schools compete in Metro Championships

MOUNTAIN BROOK – Oak Mountain, Thompson and Berry Middle schools competed at the Metro Championships at Mountain Brook High School on April 20. Oak Mountain Middle School came in fourth overall in the girls’ meet, which was the top performance by any school in the county, while Thompson Middle School came in third in the boys’ meet, best in the county as well.

For the Oak Mountain girls’ squad, Nicole Payne won the 400-meter dash with a Metro Championship record time of 56.5 seconds. Payne also finished first in the 800-meter run as well. Finishing directly behind Payne in the 800-meter run was Evie Bell, also of Oak Mountain. Bell also placed second in the 1600-meter run as well. Morgan Terry finished seventh in the 400-meter dash, Asia Turner came in sixth in the 200-meter dash, Caroline Dorsey finished eighth in the 300-meter hurdles and Maren LaPorte finished fifth in the high jump to round out the individual scorers for Oak Mountain.

Elsewhere in the girls meet, Zoria Miller of Thompson won the shot put while Kayla Shaw of Thompson placed sixth in the same event. Shaw also won the discus throw while Miller placed third and Kimberly Browder, also of Thompson, placed fourth. Angel Brown placed third in the 300-meter hurdles for the Lady Warriors while Madison Wright, also of Thompson, placed fifth in the event. Julianne Knight, also of Thompson, placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles while Milan Brown of Berry placed sixth in the event and Wright placed seventh. Kaylan Buye of Berry placed eighth in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter dash, while Brown placed sixth in 100-meter dash as well to round out all the individual scorers for the girls’ meet in the county.

In the boys’ meet, Thompson had a number of athletes score points. Tyreke Bivins won the 100-meter dash, Avry Zow placed third in the 200-meter dash, Tyrese Boddie placed seventh in the 200-meter dash while Justice Brown placed eighth, Brandon DeMarcus Lee placed sixth in the 800-meter run, and fifth in the 1600-meter run, Aaron Caffey and Cameron Childs finished first and second in the 110-meter hurdles and finished fourth and fifth on the 300-meter hurdles, Gavin Gray finished seventh in the triple jump and Kodie Robertson placed fourth in the shot put to round out the Warriors individual scorers.

Elsewhere, Christian Richburg of Berry and Earnest Russell of Oak Mountain placed fourth and sixth, respectively, in the 100-meter dash, Glenn Humphrey of Oak Mountain won the 200-meter dash while Kameron McDaniel of Berry finished fourth in the 200-meter dash and also won the 400-meter dash. Joseph Reese of Berry placed second in the 800-meter run while EJ Moses, also of Berry, placed eighth. Reese also placed sixth in the 1600-meter run. Noah Brown and Tyler Mattox, both of Oak Mountain, placed third and sixth in the 110-meter hurdles, while Zachary Shaw of Berry and Caleb Kelly of Oak Mountain placed third and eighth in the 300-meter hurdles, respectively. Earnest Russell and Clay Collins, both of Oak Mountain, placed eighth in the triple jump and sixth in the discus, respectively, to round out all the individual scorers in the county.
