Jefferson Dowell “Buck” Falkner, age 94, of Columbiana, died Friday, April 24.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 28 at Columbiana First Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Miller and Rev. Tom Minor officiating. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Gardens. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m., Tuesday, April 28 at Columbiana First Baptist Church. Bolton Funeral Home is directing.
Mr. Falkner was a graduate of Shelby County High School Class of 1938. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Columbiana. He served his country during World War II in England as crew chief for airplane mechanics repairing B-24, 25, and 26’s. For 33 years, he served the City of Columbiana as either Mayor, City Councilman, or City Superintendent. Mr. Falkner was given an Honorary Lifetime Membership to the Alabama Natural Gas Association by their Board of Directors. He served the Association as Treasurer for eight years. He served as Grand Marshal for the Liberty Day Celebration and also, in 2010, was the Grand Marshal in the Columbiana Christmas Parade. In 2012, Mr. Falkner was on the last Birmingham Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. with daughter-in-law Janice, her father, Joe McCormick (deceased), and brother-in-law Jack. All three men were WWII veterans.
Mr. Falkner is preceded in death by his parents, Bama Baldwin and Sheriff Curtis Jefferson Falkner; his son, Jefferson Dowell Falkner, Jr.; his wife of 67 years, Lorene; and sister, Marie Bradley (Jack).
He is survived by his son, Terry (Gayle); daughter-in-law, Janice McCormick Falkner; grandchildren, Jefferson Dowell III (Donna), Jason Bryan (Candy), Jon Juzan (Julie), Rebecca, Katie, and Zach Falkner; great-grandchildren, James David Falkner, Matthew and Brent Holsomback, Caila and Brandon Lambert, Emma and Maddie Falkner; niece, Ramona Bristow Klinner (Mike); nephews, Mike Atchison (Nena) and Sam Bristow; and numerous other family and friends.
A special thanks to members of a supper club that met monthly dating back to the 1950’s which included the Heads, Davises, Hills, McLeroys, and Nolens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s of Central Alabama, 300 Office Park Dr., Suite 225, Birmingham, AL 35223.
Pallbearers will be Oliver Head, Mike Hill, Jeff Falkner III, Jason Falkner, Jon Falkner, and Zach Falkner. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School class, which includes Owen Joiner, Austin Moore, William Rasco, Nick Smith, and Emery Walton.
