HOOVER—Melissa Meyer, a nursing student at Jefferson State Community College, was quick to answer when asked what she liked most about Hoover.

“There’s always something to do!” Meyer said.

Meyer, along with fellow Jeff State students Lauren Wood and Ryan Stricklin, were just a few of the thousands of people who traveled to Hoover’s Veterans Park on May 2 for the city’s annual Celebrate Hoover Day.

In its eighth year, the festival showcases the many things Hoover has to offer, from live entertainment and food to a variety of vendors and even a giant apple pie baked by Jeff State’s Culinary and Hospitality Institute.

The annual event regularly draws more than 10,000 people to Veterans Park.

Student talent was highlighted as Spain Park’s Pride of the Park marching band, cheerleaders and dance team took to the stage to kick off the festivities at 10 a.m. Other live entertainment included clog dancing performances, square dancing and bands.

The free event offered fun for the whole family, including a car show, an array of carnival rides and face painting for children. It also gave people a chance to get outside, enjoy the sunshine and experience Hoover’s attractions.

“Living here,” Susan Davis replied when asked what she liked most about Hoover.

“It’s the people,” John Cover added. “Everyone is nice.”
