TROY–The Helena Huskies girls softball team competed in the AHSAA 5A South Central Regional Tournament the weekend of May 9, where they saw their season end after dropping two of three games in the double-elimination tournament.

Helena came into the tournament as the Class 5A Area 7 winner and opened tournament play against Brewbaker Tech, where the Huskies led 5-1 heading to the seventh and final inning.

Brewbaker scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to give the Huskies a scare but the defense was able to hold off in the end to get their first win of the tournament.

The second game of the tournament didn’t turn out as well for Helena as the Huskies committed six errors and gave up 12 hits in a loss to Shelby County High School 9-5.

Cat Nash of Shelby County recorded three hits and plated two runs for the Wildcats in five plate appearances.

Helena was bumped to the loser’s bracket after the loss to the Wildcats, where they faced Marbury in a win or go home situation.

Helena was ahead 3-2 heading to the bottom of the sixth inning until Marbury’s Hannah Lee hit a clutch two-run homerun to put the Bulldogs ahead 4-3.

The Huskies had one final chance in the top of the seventh inning to try and tie the game at four to extend the game but couldn’t do so.

Kallaher hit a lead-off double but was stranded and the Huskies season came to an end.

The Huskies still finished the season strong for a first year program by becoming the Class 5A Area 7 champions.
