It’s the prime time of year to visit Dancing Daylily Garden, an AHS (American Hemerocallis Society) garden where over 1,300 delightful and amusingly named daylilies may be viewed and purchased.

Two passions shared by Becky and Morris Parr are, yes, dancing and daylilies!

The couple met serendipitously at a Cajun dance night at the Concordia Club in Birmingham.

New to the club, Morris was appreciative that Becky and her friend took turns showing him the steps.

The couple enjoyed date nights of Cajun, Zydeco and ballroom classes prior to getting married in December 2008.

A full, ruffled peach daylily named “Dosey Doe” by Breeder Dale Hensley honors the Parr’s union.

Other dance-loving friends who, when referring to their style, said, “When we dance, we are just like a couple of possums in a sack,” now have their own daylily, too, called, yes, “Possum In a Sack!”

After the challenges the recent past has brought—a house fire, a plane crash in their back yard, double knee-replacement surgery for Becky as well as a double mastectomy, Becky Parr says she believes, “It all happened for a reason. We now have a new house with proper wiring.”

The house was Becky’s childhood home.

“My breast cancer was found early and I needed no chemo or radiation,” she said. “And, Morris and I are back to ballroom dancing again.”

At the Concordia Club, monthly dances are held, usually based on a theme.

The next one is Beach Party and when the holidays arrive, there are always celebratory dances with friends, new and old.

“Many couples met in dancing classes, as we did,” Becky said, “And we also celebrate their unions with a special night.”

The couple has, as well, become a part of Canaan Baptist Church.

“They pulled us in and loved on us,” Parr said. “And now I have been on my first mission trip (to Guatemala) where I participated as a triage nurse.”

Meanwhile, the last two Saturdays in June (and also by appointment), you can waltz for yourself among “Twist & Shout,” “Mango Tango,” “Vienna Waltz,” “Wildfire Tango,” “Square Dancers Curtsey” and “Long-Legged Lap Dancer.”
