Robert Lee (Bobby) Godfrey, age 72, of Calera, met his Redeemer on Monday, July 27, in Birmingham.
He was born July 12, 1943, in Natchez, Miss., weighing in at 4 pounds. He had a heart of gold and left this earth much better than he found it. He was raised by his grandparents and was forever thankful that they stepped in and took him in as one of their own.
He was preceded in death by parents, W.W. & Mae Godfrey, Marie Drees; daughter, Anna Marie Godfrey and brother, Jack Drees.
He is survived by his wife, Velma Jean Sizemore Godfrey; children, Robin (Steve) Acre, Beth (Ricky) Winterbottom, Chris Godfrey; grandchildren, Anna (Rev. Stephen) Cannon, Lauren Acre, Paul (fiancé Jenny Jackson) Winterbottom, Brad Acre, Adam (Chelsie) Winterbottom and Maddy Acre; great grandchildren, Savannah, Will and Bethany Cannon, Wyatt Winterbottom; siblings, Martha (Jake) Propst, Sonny Drees, Sidney (Betty) Godfrey and Linda Miller.
He loved his precious Boston terriers Millie, Dixie and Bubba. He was one of the funniest men you would ever meet and when he entered a room you certainly knew it. He made people laugh with his stories and had a new one every day.
He retired from Blue Circle and the City of Calera and then worked part time as a bailiff at the Shelby County Courthouse. He was a current member of Pelham Baptist Church and had been a member for 49 years of Calera Baptist Church. He loved Jesus with all of his heart and his one desire, in his hand-written funeral plans, was that all his friends and family be saved so he could see them all again in Heaven.
He loved Auburn football, camping, making people laugh, baseball and sharing his love with others. He graduated from Calera High in 1961 and played all three sports and played them well. He married his high school sweetheart in 1961 and they enjoyed 54 years together.
His favorite verse was Acts 20:35, “it is more blessed to give than to receive” and it showed in everything he did for others. He certainly, “fought the good fight, finished the race and kept the faith” and heard his Jesus say, “well done my good and faithful servant”.
His Homecoming service will be Friday, July 31, at 1 p.m. at Pelham First Baptist Church with visitation from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and interment in Shelby Memory Gardens. Donations can be made to Sav-a-life Shelby, P.O. Box 1359, Pelham, 35124.
