HARPERSVILLE—Things will be a little greener in Harpersville, thanks to a grant the town recently received from the Alabama Power Foundation.

“We are really excited about it,” Mayor Theoangelo Perkins said of the $1,000 Good Roots grant.

The Good Roots grant is given to cities, schools, towns and nonprofit organizations across Alabama to help fund tree planting projects.

In partnership with the Alabama Forestry Commission and the Alabama Urban Forestry Association, the Alabama Power Foundation awarded 44 Good Roots grants. To date, the Alabama Power Foundation has awarded more than $650,000 in Good Roots grants, an Alabama Power news release stated.

“Good Roots is making a significant impact in our communities,” Alabama Power Foundation President John Hudson wrote in a news release. “Beyond their aesthetic value, trees can boost property values, make public spaces more inviting and contribute to a better quality of life.”

Harpersville will use the Good Roots grant to purchase 10 crape myrtle trees for the town’s park.

“Some say it’s only $1,000, but… man, what you can do with $1,000!” Perkins said, noting beautification is important to Harpersville.

The 10 crape myrtle trees purchased with the grant will replace several trees cut down last year, Perkins said.
