The Helena Police Department responded to a domestic violence call in the early morning hours of Sept. 20 after the caller reported his wife, Sharon Hancock, had assaulted him with the knife, said Helena police Sgt. Chris Rollan.

“Officers arrived on scene and met with the caller who had been an obvious altercation and was bleeding from both hands as a result of defending himself against (Hancock), who allegedly tried to stab him,” Rollan wrote in an email, noting the caller likely was attempting to gain control of the weapon when he was cut.

After police arrived, they arrested Hancock on one felony count of second-degree domestic violence. The victim was transported to a local hospital, where he was treated for “minor lacerations” and later released, Rollan said.

Hancock was booked into the Shelby County Jail on the second-degree domestic violence charge, and was released after posting a $10,000 bond on Sept. 22.

She is set to appear in Shelby County District Court on Oct. 15 for a preliminary hearing at 8:30 a.m., according to court documents.

Second-degree domestic violence is a Class B felony, according to Alabama law, and is punishable by up to 20 years in prison upon conviction.
