Calera dominates region finale

LIVINGSTON – Calera dominated the first half Friday night for a 50-19 Class 5A, Region 4 victory over Sumter Central at the University of West Alabama’s Tiger Stadium.

“I thought that was a really god experience for the kids. They were excited to get out there on that turf field. I thought they played well. I was real proud of them,” Calera head coach Wiley McKeller said.

Tyler Ferguson completed 8-of-9 passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns in his one half of play. He also rushed for a 4-yard touchdown, which put the Eagles on the board, 6-0, early in the game.

Kyle Harrell had two first-quarter touchdowns on a 9-yard reception from Ty Evans, who was 1-for-2 passing, and a 3-yard run. Ferguson’s first TD pass, a 12-yard connection to Charles White, made it 27-7. White led the Eagles’ receivers with 52 yards. Alex Dozier followed with a 30-yard fumble return to give the Eagles a 33-7 lead after 12 minutes of play.

Calera added 17 points in the second quarter en route to a 50-7 halftime lead. Jaramy Dozier, who led CHS with 71 yards on five carries, had a 5-yard run, Zach Ford kicked a 25-yard field goal, and a 4-yard TD run by Trez Harris. Ford had three PATs in the game. Calera held Sumter Central to -19 yards on offense in the first half and forced four turnovers on defense.

With the first string sitting the second half, Calera throttled back in the final 24 minutes of play. Sumter managed to add six points in the third and fourth quarters each.

Calera (7-2, 5-2) will host Chilton County (3-6) Thursday, Oct. 29 to close the regular season. Kickoff is 7 p.m.
