HELENA–Parents, students and administrators packed the Helena Middle School gym on Tuesday, Oct. 27 as the school inducted the highest number of students ever into the National Junior Honor Society.

A total of 76 HMS students were recognized in the ceremony to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, citizenship and character.

The NJHS was established in 1929 and it is estimated that more than 1 million students participate in official honor society activities, according to the society’s website.

“This is the highest number of inductees we’ve ever had at Helena Middle School,” said Principal Scott Knight. “These 76 students could not be where they are right now without the help of a supportive family at home and without the love and care from their teachers so we want to thank them as well.”

Five HMS students represented the five different characteristics of a National Junior Honor Society student.

Jack Dickerson represented scholarship, Jabe Hildreth represented service, Madison Chapman represented leadership, Eli Richardson represented citizenship and Abigail Ford represented Character.

“Scholarship means a commitment to learning,” said Dickerson. “A student is going to spend hours reading and studying for the lasting benefits. We should continue to learn even when formal education has ended. Knowledge is one great element in life.”

The 76 students were called to receive their certificates one-by-one and then were applauded for their achievements.

The group collectively recited the NJHS pledge and were rewarded with a reception in the cafeteria after the ceremony.
