FROM STAFF REPORTS

HOOVER—Jefferson State Community College’s Liberal Arts Department will present a free lecture on the history of the English language on Wednesday, Dec. 2 at 7 p.m. The lecture will be led by Dr. David Basilico in the multi-purpose room of the Health Sciences building.

Basilico is an associate professor of English at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His presentation will focus on how the English language developed from Indo-European through common Germanic to Old English, Middle English and then Early Modern English.

Basilico will particularly concentrate on sound changes, which demonstrates the relation between English and other European languages and why spelling does not always line up with pronunciation.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. The Jeff State Health Sciences building is part of the Shelby-Hoover Campus and is located on Valleydale Road, across from Veterans Park.

For more information about the program, call Chair of Liberal Arts J. Kyle Irvin at 983-5960 or email kirvin@jeffstateonline.com.
