Jacquelyn H. “Jackie” Cates, age 85, of Columbiana, died Friday, Dec. 18.

The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 21 at Columbiana United Methodist Church with Rev. Buster Timmons and Rev. Pete Grice officiating. Burial will follow in Pinelawn Gardens. Visitation will be from noon – 1 p.m., Monday, Dec. 21 at the church. Bolton Funeral Home is directing.

Jackie was born on June 30, 1930 in Hartford and was raised in Samson. She attended Samson High School and went on to Huntington College and Auburn University. She married John Lewis Cates on Feb. 10, 1950 and they moved to Columbiana in 1955, where they took over the family business, Cates Milk Hauling and the family farm. They operated the business until the death of Mr. Cates in 1998.

Jackie was a very active member of the Columbiana United Methodist Church. Over the years she held many different rolls in the church including being the President of the UMW and Chairman of the Worship Committee. Jackie was the happiest when she would seasonally decorate the sanctuary. She was also a member of the choir and directed the “Hanging of the Greens” at Christmas for many years.

Additional activities included the Cattleman’s Association, past member and president of the Columbiana Culture Club and participated in area schools when her children were younger.

Jackie loved God, family, friends and church without question.

Mrs. Cates is preceded in death by her parents, Benjamin Brown Howell and Ruby Sykes Howell; her husband, John L. Cates; and sons, John H. Cates and James R. Cates.

She is survived by son, Jeffry C. Cates (Zela); grandchildren, Stacey C. Hall (Charlie), James M. “Jae” Cates (Isabel), Nikki Bradbury (Bo); five great grandchildren; brother, Ben Howell (Sandy), daughter-in-law, Mary Cates; and numerous other family and friends.
