MONTEVALLO – Montevallo overcame a five-point deficit late in the fourth quarter to force overtime before outscoring the visiting Mountain Lions 12-8 in the extra period on its way to securing a 52-48 win over Young Harris in Peach Belt Conference play at Trustmark Arena.

The Falcons got off to a hot start with a three-pointer by senior Katherine Goldsby midway through the first period giving Montevallo a 5-0 lead. A layup by senior Jasmine Thomas with 24 seconds remaining in the period gave the Falcons a 11-4 advantage, which marked their largest lead in the game, at the end of the first quarter.

Young Harris opened the second period with an 11-0 run, capped with a jumper by Meredith Tarver with 5:48 remaining in the opening half, which gave the Mountain Lions a 15-11 lead.

Freshman Ashley Dunstan knocked down a pair of three-pointers moments later to put the Falcons back on top and Montevallo carried a 21-20 lead into the locker room at halftime when senior Courtney McKenzie drained a jumper with seven seconds remaining in the first half.

Sophomore D’Miyah Foster made a layup five seconds into the third period to give Montevallo a 23-20 lead, which marked the Falcons’ largest lead before overtime. A jumper by McKenzie late in the third period gave the Falcons a 30-28 advantage heading into the final period.

The Mountain Lions opened the fourth period with a 12-5 run, capped with a free throw by Sara Jorgensen, to take a 40-35 lead with 2:53 remaining in the contest. The Falcons ended regulation with a furious rally, with a free throw by Goldsby and back-to-back jumpers by junior Rayvon Christian and Foster tying the game at 40-40 at the end of the fourth period.

Christian made a jumper with 1:06 remaining in overtime to give Montevallo a 49-44 lead, effectively clinching the game for the Falcons.

STAT OF THE GAME

The Falcons’ reserves outscored the Young Harris bench 32-8 in the contest, with Goldsby contributing eight points after coming off the bench for the first time this season.

BEYOND THE NUMBERS

Ten different Montevallo players scored in the victory over Young Harris, marking a season-high for players contributing in the scoring column.
