After what has been a tough start to the season for the girls basketball team from Chelsea High School, the Lady Hornets were able to split a pair of games on Jan. 15-16 as they are in the midst of trying to get their season back on track. On Jan. 15 Chelsea traveled to Oxford to play in a crucial area game before travelling to Briarwood just 24 hours later to take on the Lady Lions. Chelsea was able to get past Oxford on the first night to win the more important game of the two before falling to Briarwood.

After losing to Oxford on Jan. 8, the Lady Hornets had almost a week off before taking the floor again in their second meeting with the Lady Yellow Jackets of the season. Chelsea was tied with Oxford, 10-10 after the first quarter before falling behind by a razor-thin, one-point margin at the break before coming back to get a crucial win by a final of 55-53 to move to 5-12 (1-2).

Michaella Edwards had the game of her life against Oxford, accounting for 30 points and 11 rebounds to lead the way for the Lady Hornets. Hope Richard had 11 points and nine boards as well while Khalari South added six points and seven rebounds to give Chelsea the win.

Chelsea’s second game of the back-to-back was not nearly as close, as Briarwood came out of the gate firing and beat the Lady Hornets handily, 55-29 as Briarwood moved to 15-6 (2-2) as Chelsea fell to 5-13. Molly McKenzie led Briarwood over Chelsea with 18 points and five assists, as Chelsea had no real chance in the contest to stop Briarwood’s attacking offense.

Chelsea’s next contest will be against Pell City on Jan. 22 as the Lady Hornets try and pull themselves back to .500 in area play.
