ALABASTER – Adults looking to showcase their basketball skills while helping Alabaster’s sister schools in Honduras will have a chance to do so in late February.

The all-day basketball tournament will be held in the Thompson High School gymnasium on Feb. 20 from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. The tournament will consist of five-on-five games, and the entry fee for each team is $100.

All proceeds raised during the tournament will benefit the Alabaster City School System’s Sister School project, through which Alabaster students and teachers are making regular trips to Honduras to share ideas with their Central American counterparts.

In summer 2015, a group of ACS teachers, administrators and central office staff members traveled to Jutiapa, Honduras, to examine the city’s education infrastructure.

Since returning, the school leaders have been working with local students in preparation for a return trip to the country this summer, which will include students, teachers, administrators and central office staff members.

This year’s Honduras trip is scheduled for June 12-22.

Thompson Middle School Assistant Principal Desaree Jackson, who traveled to Honduras during last year’s trip, said the Sister School project is using the basketball tournament to support the program while also generating local interest for adult basketball.

“We chose a basketball tournament because there isn’t an adult basketball league here,” Jackson said. “We wanted to possibly spark some interest in that.”

In addition to the basketball tournament, the Sister School project also is planning a fundraiser 5K race on March 12 at Veterans Park off Alabama 119. Jackson said the group will release more information on the race as the date draws closer.
