FROM STAFF REPORTS

HOOVER—St. Vincent’s One Nineteen completed the first surgery in its new outpatient surgery center on Jan. 29. Not only was the surgery, a bone anchored hearing aid implant, a first in the new facility, it was also one of the first in Shelby County.

The BAHA is a medically implanted device to help patients who are not candidates for a traditional hearing aid with hearing loss. Unlike most hearing aids, the BAHA transmits sound waves through the bones in the skull to stimulate the cochlea, completely bypassing the outer and middle ear.

Otologist Grayson Rodgers performed the surgery on patient Gregg B. Smith.

This surgery is only one of the many outpatient surgery options available to patients at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen. The new outpatient surgery center offers a range of same-day procedures, including general surgery, ophthalmology, orthopedics, podiatry, plastic surgery, pain management, ENT and gynecology.

The St. Vincent’s One Nineteen Outpatient Surgery Center includes four operating rooms and two procedure rooms.

“It’s always been our vision to offer our community outpatient surgery at St. Vincent’s One Nineteen, and today we make that vision a reality,” Stephanie Holderby, St. Vincent’s One Nineteen executive director and St. Vincent’s Ambulatory Healthcare Network vice president of operations, wrote in a Jan. 29 news release. “We look forward to offering many more patients like Gregg Smith life-changing surgery options from St. Vincent’s within the convenience of their own community.”

The outpatient surgery center has been a part of the St. Vincent’s One Nineteen expansion plan since the facility was built nearly a decade ago. In addition to the expansion, the campus boasts 50 physicians in 14 medical specialties, a comprehensive outpatient diagnostic imaging center, rehabilitation services, GI lab, wellness services and classes, a spa and fitness center.
