Feb. 8

Helena girls knock off Calera

The Lady Huskies of Helena beat Calera in the first round of the 5A Area 7 tournament by a final score of 53-46 to advance to the area tournament finals. Jordan Jones and Jenn Brown each had 15 points for Helena while Tyesha Haynes led all scorers with 18 points for Calera. Helena will play Central Tuscaloosa in the area championship tonight at 6 p.m.

 

Chelsea girls fall to Oxford

The Lady Hornets lost to Oxford in the first round of the 6A Area 10 tournament by a final score of 65-34. Michaella Edwards had 15 points in the loss to lead Chelsea. The loss ended the season for Chelsea.

 

Montevallo girls rolls Oak Grove

The Lady Bulldogs of Montevallo beat Oak Grove easily in the first round of the 4A Area 7 tournament by a final of 85-37. Montevallo will now play West Blocton in the area tournament finals on Thursday, as West Blocton beat Holy Family via forfeit. Montevallo is hosting the 4A Area 7 tournament, and will play West Blocton in the finals at 6 p.m.

 

Vincent girls beat Fayetteville

The Lady Jackets of Vincent beat Fayetteville by 30 points, 54-24, on Monday night to advance to the 2A Area 9 finals. Vincent will play Thorsby in the area championship tonight at Thorsby at 6 p.m.

 

 

Feb. 9

Chelsea advances to area finals

The Hornets of Chelsea defeated Pell City 55-36 on Tuesday night to secure a spot in the 6A Area 10 championship game, and subsequently a spot in the 6A sub-regional round. Sam Towery hit back-to-back threes in the first quarter to turn a 6-5 deficit into an 11-6 lead that Chelsea never relinquished. Matt Marquet led Chelsea with 12 points while Josh Hanna had nine. Chelsea will play Oxford for the area title on Friday at 7 p.m. at Oxford.

 

Helena beats Calera to advance to area finals

Helena cruised to a 67-37 win over Calera in the first round of the 5A Area 7 tournament. Helena jumped out to a 12-0 lead and never looked back. Now the Huskies will host the area finals on Friday, when they will take on Central-Tuscaloosa at 7 p.m.

 

Spain Park girls fall to Hewitt

The Lady Jaguars from Spain Park took on Hewitt-Trussville in the first round of the 7A Area 6 tournament, and lost a close game by a final of 67-61. Spain Park had beaten Hewitt twice in the regular season, but couldn’t pull off the three-peat. Spain Park finished the season with a 15-14 record.

 

Briarwood girls’ comeback bid falls short

After pulling back from an early 15-point deficit, the Lady Lions from Briarwood pushed John Carroll to overtime in the opening round of the 6A Area 9 tournament, but fell by a final of 65-57, which ended their season. Briarwood finished the year with a 19-10 record.

 

Shelby County girls lose in area tourney

The Shelby County Lady Wildcats lost to Sylacauga in the opening round of the 5A Area 8 tournament by a final of 55-42 to end their season.

 

Pelham girls’ season ends at hands of Homewood

Pelham traveled to Homewood for the first round of the 6A Area 9 tournament, and were turned away with a 58-19 loss, which ended the Lady Panthers season. Pelham finished the year with six wins.
