ALABASTER – A Juvenile victim was airlifted to UAB hospital with serious injuries after he was involved in an all-terrain-vehicle accident in an undeveloped portion of an Alabaster subdivision.
The Alabaster police and fire departments responded to Alabaster’s Grande View subdivision at about 5:50 p.m. on March 7 after receiving a call reporting the ATV wreck.
Alabaster Fire Chief Jim Golden said firefighters arrived on the scene and discovered a juvenile male had suffered significant injuries after the ATV the juvenile was riding crashed in an undeveloped portion of the neighborhood off Grande View Parkway.
Because the paramedics had a difficult time reaching the victim – and because of the nature of the victim’s injuries – the Fire Department requested LifeSaver helicopter to transport the victim to UAB Hospital.
“Due to the severity and mechanism of injury, as well as the extended time and difficulty of getting the patient back to a main road, we felt it was in the best interest of the patient to request LifeSaver helicopter to transport (the victim) to UAB,” Golden said. “Our paramedics on scene spoke with the doctor via cell phone, and the doctor affirmed our decision.”
As of March 8, Golden said he had not yet received any updates on the patient’s condition.
“We certainly wish him well, and will keep him in our thoughts and prayers,” Golden said, who encouraged those who ride ATVs, bicycles and skateboards to always wear approved and properly fitted helmets when doing so.
