HELENA–The Helena Huskies boys soccer team got an opening round win in the Birmingham Boys Metro Soccer Tournament against the Mountain Brook Spartans 2-0 on March 14.

During the tournament, the Huskies will take on three 7A opponents including Vestavia, Oak Mountain and the Spartans in the A division of the tournament. The division also includes Homewood, Pelham and Spain Park while Mountain Brook is competing in the B division.

The tournament is based on a 10-point scoring system that includes teams being given six points for a win, three points for a tie, one point per goal up to three and one point for a shutout.

Helena got on the board first with a nice goal that saw Brennen Brown cross in from Cael Cranor to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

Helena’s second goal came just three minutes into the second half on a nice kick from the corner by Jeremy Hughes to put the Huskies up for good and preserve the 2-0 victory.

Helena head coach Zach Morgan overall was pleased with his team’s effort.

“It was a good match and I thought we played extremely well,” said Morgan. “It seemed that we controlled most of the game so I thought that was pretty good. They came to try and attack and with them being a 7A team we knew that they’d do that. We just tried to set up the best formation that we could against it and relied on a lot of counter attacks and we were able to put two away.”

Helena did not receive any points in the win however because Mountain Brook is competing in the B division.
