HELENA–The halls of Helena Intermediate School were lined with third, fourth and fifth grade students various artwork that they’ve worked on the entire school year, and on Tuesday, April 19, the school held its year end art show for parents and family members to come see the students work.

 

Students were eager to head to either the third, fourth or fifth grade hallway to show off their work as HIS Art Teacher Holly Pryor instructed parents on where to go.

Pryor is a 1984 graduate of the University of Montevallo and in her eighth year teaching art at HIS.

“This is what we’ve been working on throughout the year and the students got to choose which artwork to be displayed,” said Pryor. “We used anything from crayons, water color and tempera paint, oil pastels, cutting and pasting projects that are more hands-on. We also just completed a unit in ceramics and it was my first time doing that.”

Sarah and Hannah Bradford are third and fourth grade students at HIS and discussed the projects they chose to be displayed.

“My favorite project was the crayon project and I drew a picture of a desert and a road,” said Sarah.

Hannah said that students attend art class once a week and it normally takes a few weeks to complete each project.

“My favorite project was with crayons and markers,” said Hannah. “We had to pick an animal and draw it and then do quilts around it and make sure to have a background. I chose a rabbit because it’s my favorite animal.”

Pryor said her greatest joy in teaching art is seeing the knowledge of the children and their excitement.

“My favorite thing is seeing the children and seeing their excitement and seeing what they’re able to do after learning something new,” said Pryor.
