NORTH SHELBY—Family fun, delicious food and giving back all come together at Oak Mountain Middle School’s Spring Fling. The community-wide event will take place on the school’s football field from 5-9 p.m. on Friday, May 6.

The Spring Fling features a variety of fun activities for all ages, including kickball, cornhole, volleyball, Jenga, twister and, the centerpiece of the event, life-size foosball.

“There have been three cities or so who have done (life-size foosball), and its gone viral on YouTube,” parent volunteer Alex Fey said. “We took…different ideas from online and created our own.”

With the support of local businesses Men’s Warehouse, Auto Whiz, Consolidated Pipe and Supply Co., Severe Service Specialists and Jimmy Parker Custom Homes, a group of seven parent volunteers designed and constructed a life-size foosball table.

Players position themselves along rows of pipe, and just like the tabletop game, players must stay in their designated spot along the pipe.

Along with games, there will also be live music from local bands and a variety of food trucks serving up tasty treats.

This year’s Spring Fling is the first of its kind at Oak Mountain Middle School.

“We planned it to be the first of many to come,” Fey said. “This is the one that pulls in the community.”

Entry to the Spring Fling costs $5 per person. Proceeds from the event benefit the PTO’s numerous school initiatives.

“They fund several different things, (such as) athletics, special projects, just a variety of projects throughout the school system at Oak Mountain,” parent volunteer Michelle Burns said.

Money raised will be distributed to the PTOs many groups and put in to projects to benefit the school, students and teachers.

“We’re raising money for all the PTO organizations within the school,” Fey said. “And more importantly, we wanted to provide a community-wide event.”
