FROM STAFF REPORTS

MONTEVALLO–For the fifth consecutive year, The University of Montevallo has been named a College of Distinction. UM is one of only two universities in the state to be selected for the Public Colleges of Distinction 2016.

The Colleges of Distinction guidebook features colleges and universities that consistently provide a remarkable undergraduate experience and produce successful graduates by meeting student’s individual interests, needs and career aspirations.

“Being named a College of Distinction is a true compliment to our faculty,” said Dr. Rick Barth, vice president for enrollment management. “Since this organization recognizes colleges that are the best places to learn, to grow and to succeed, what they are really recognizing are colleges that put student learning above all else. For us, it is a recognition of the outstanding job our faculty are doing engaging students in the learning environment.”

Each distinguished college is subject to a rigorous research process including in-person campus visits, interviews with a cross-section of the campus community, school records research and discussions with admissions directors and staff. This research produces verifiable results across four distinctions that includes engaged students, great teaching, vibrant community and successful outcomes.

“The schools with profiles in this guidebook emphasize core skills such as critical thinking, writing, research and global perspectives. They must also offer out-of-classroom learning programs,” said Colleges of Distinction Executive Editor Tyson Schritter. “Each school provides an excellent undergraduate education as well as valuable life experience.”

Colleges of Distinction has recognized and honored schools throughout the U.S. for excellence in undergraduate-focused higher education. The member schools in the Colleges of Distinction consortium distinguish themselves through their focus on the undergraduate experience.
