CHELSEA – Several lanes of U.S. 280 at Walmart in Chelsea have been shut down following a fatal, multiple-vehicle wreck on the afternoon of May 12.

At 1:10 p.m., Shelby County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the crash, which resulted in the closure of both westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of U.S. 280.

SCSO Deputy Debbie Sumrall said the crash involved six vehicles.

“The road is going to be closed for awhile,” Sumrall said.

Sumrall said the road closures could last several hours the afternoon of May 12, and advised motorists to use Old U.S. 280 as a detour route.

Other agencies responding to the crash are Alabama State Troopers and the Shelby County traffic task force, Sumrall said.
