Hilda Jeanette Smith Cary, age 86, of Thorsby, passed away Sunday, May 8 at Hatley Healthcare.

She was born in Sylacauga on Nov. 13, 1929, daughter of the late Eugene Lawson Smith and the late Lillian Childress.

She was a 1951 graduate of Montevallo College, where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. She went on to teach for various schools within the Shelby County School System while spending the last 22 years of her career as an educator at Shelby County High School until her retirement.

She is survived by her daughter, Shirley Cary of Birmingham; and son, Jeffrey Cary of Thorsby.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Lillian Smith; her husband, Walter Ned Cary; and her brother, Rex Gunn.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, May 11 at the City of Montevallo Cemetery at 10 a.m. with Rev. Robert Sandifer officiating.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Jemison Internal Medicine, Hatley Healthcare, and Southern Care Hospice for all of their love and kindness shown during Mrs. Hilda’s life.
