CHELSEA – Faith, fine arts, athletics and more will converge in a weeklong day camp for children at Liberty Baptist Church this month.

From June 13 to June 17, children who have completed first through fifth grades in the 2015-2016 school year can participate in XLR8 Day Camp, an experience in which each camper may choose two specialized track times, such as basketball, baseball, softball, cheer, dance, art studio, discovery lab, sign language, volleyball, flag football, soccer, crochet and board games, along with worship, Bible study and other activities.

“Our main thing is for the kids to know and grow in Jesus,” said Laura Cain, ministry director for elementary school-aged children. “We just want kids to come and be in an environment to help them know and grow in Jesus.”

The camp was created about eight years ago and is open to any child, regardless of membership status at Liberty or any other church, Cain said.

“We just invite anyone that wants to participate,” Cain said. “Parents, if they want to look and see what’s going on and visit, we have no problem with that.”

Forms for XLR8 may be picked up from the church office, Kids Ministry Office or at the Kids Information Desk. The cost per camper is $90, with a $25 deposit due upon registering a child with a $65 balance due in the Kids Ministry Office by June 8.

The cost includes instructors from Infinity Sports, Inc., snacks, a T-shirt, supplies and rental fee for the Chelsea Community Center. In addition, a camp photo will be sent to families electronically.

Cain said those interested in participating may register as late as the first day of camp or any day before it ends, but early registration is encouraged.

“They can come anytime. There’s no deadline,” she said, but added some track times have a limited number of spots available. “The earlier they register, the better.”

Qualified and trained sports staff from Infinity Sports and adults and teens from Liberty will team up to run the camp.

Activities will be held on the Liberty campus, at the community center and at the Chelsea Youth Club baseball complex.

Members of the Chelsea COP will stop traffic on Liberty Road and Shelby County 47 to escort children safely across the road.

Attendance at XLR8 has grown over the years. Eighty-nine campers participated the first year, compared to 230 in 2015, Cain said.

Cain, who has completed her 21st year at the church, said XLR8 is the most fun week of the year for her.

“I love it,” she said. “At the end of the week, a video will be shown for parents to see what’s going on. We are so excited.”

The camp will take place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

During the same week, Liberty will hold Vacation Bible School for preschoolers from 9 a.m. to noon daily.
