James “Wayne” Chance, age 65, of Pelham, passed away Thursday, June 2. He was born on March 12, 1951.

The Shelby County native was a 1970 graduate of Thompson High School. Soon after finishing high school, Wayne worked at Pullman Standard. Later, he was owner of Chance Construction for 37 years before becoming employed at C.S. Beatty Construction.

Wayne’s favorite pastimes included hunting, riding motorcycles, and fixing his family’s and neighbors’ vehicles. He was a deacon and active member of Pelham Church of God of Prophecy.

Wayne was predeceased by his father, James Chance, and one son, Brad Chance. Survivors include Wayne’s loving wife of 44 years, Becky Chance; his mother, Bessie Chance; sister, Kay Jones (Gary); and brothers, Jerry Chance (Janie), Steve Chance (Brenda), and Ray Chance.

Visitation was from 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, June 5 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Funeral Home, Pelham. The funeral service will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 6 at Ridout’s Southern Heritage Chapel, Pelham, followed by burial at Southern Heritage Cemetery, Pelham. Rev. Steve Chance and Rev. Glenn McCord will officiate.
