COLUMBIANA – Three suspects who are facing charges alleging they gave birth to children who tested positive for controlled substances at Alabaster’s Shelby Baptist Medical Center have been granted supervised visitation with their children while they await the resolution of their charges, according to court documents.
Pelham resident Jenny Lee Johnson, Vandiver resident Courtney Marie Isbell and Pelham resident Christen Gabrielle Burke have each been granted supervised visitation with their children through agreements with prosecutors in their cases.
All three suspects have pending felony charges of chemical endangerment of a child in Shelby County District Court.
The Alabaster Police Department arrested Johnson, who lists an address on Silverleaf Circle in Pelham, on Dec. 8, 2015, and charged her with the felony after police said she gave birth to a boy at Shelby Baptist on Oct. 24, 2015, who tested positive for opiates.
Johnson was released from the Shelby County Jail on Dec. 12, 2015, after posting a $10,000 bond.
An original condition of Johnson’s bond was for her to have no contact with her child. However, District Court Judge Bill Bostick granted Johnson supervised visitation with her child at the request of Johnson’s attorney – A request the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office did not oppose.
Johnson is scheduled to appear in court on June 21.
The Alabaster Police Department arrested Isbell, who lists an address on Shelby County 50 in Vandiver, on Feb. 17 and charged her with giving birth to a child at SBMC who allegedly tested positive for marijuana on Sept. 3, 2015.
On June 8, Shelby County District Court Judge Daniel Crowson agreed to grant Isbell supervised visitation with her child through an agreement with the Shelby County Department of Human Resources.
Isbell is now set to appear in court on June 23 for a youthful offender status hearing.
The Alabaster Police Department arrested Burke, who lists an address on McCallan Drive in Pelham, on May 16 and charged her with giving birth to a child at SBMC on March 25 who allegedly tested positive for marijuana.
On June 10, Crowson granted Burke supervised visitation with her child under conditions outlined by the Shelby County DHR.
