HELENA–Helena High School head boys soccer coach Zach Morgan was recently honored for his 2016 coaching achievements by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Morgan received the award of Alabama Boys Small School State Coach of the Year presented by the NSCAA after being nominated and meeting a wide range of criteria.

In his second season as head coach of the Helena boys soccer team, Morgan led the Huskies to a 4A-5A state championship and an 18-7-2 overall record. The state championship was the first team championship for Helena High School.

“Just like last year when I won the Shelby County Reporter award, this award is the same where any recognition is not just about me,” said Morgan. “It’s definitely one of those that I’ve got to thank the assistants, players, teachers and administration. It definitely benefits the soccer program, community and the city in general so I was thankful to be nominated.”

The NSCAA said the following criteria must be exhibited for a coach to receive the coach of the year honor.

A coach must be a member of the NSCAA and have a successful record for the season, possess knowledge of the game, show rapport with the team, have a positive team image, exhibit positive conduct on the field, work for coaches organization, have community and outside involvement including clinics, camps and banquets and show respect for other coaches, officials and the media.

Morgan will receive a plaque and will enter the process to compete for Regional Coach of the Year. If chosen as Regional Coach of the Year, Morgan could potentially be nominated for National Coach of the Year.

A recognition breakfast will be held at the NSCAA convention for all regional and national winners. The convention will be held January 2017 in Los Angeles.
