ALABASTER – Mayor Marty Handlon and members of the Alabaster City Council presented outgoing City Manager George Henry with a surprise during his final City Council meeting as a city employee.

In her comments during the July 25 meeting, Handlon surprised Henry with a proclamation honoring his seven years of service to the city, and praised him for the work he has done on the city’s behalf.

Henry announced he was resigning from his position with the city to take a new job in the private sector on July 22. His last official day with the city will be on Aug. 5.

“George has played an integral role in the advancement of our city, and possesses strong project management skills. He has worked cooperatively with city officials and the community,” Handlon said while reading the proclamation. “George conscientiously tackles supplementary projects such as improving our technology, this new City Hall and utilizing grants for road improvements. George is well-known for his financial aptitude.

“His knowledge of debt structure was invaluable in restructuring the city’s debt, and has been a guiding force in leveling our debt payments for better cashflow without extending the terms of the principal,” Handlon added. “This expertise saved the city a lot of money, for which we will always be grateful. Although George will be missed, his footprint will leave a lasting mark on the city of Alabaster for generations to come.”

Several City Council members also praised Henry for his work with the city.

“Thank you for everything you have done for the city,” said Ward 1 Councilwoman Sophie Martin. “I know you will do well in the future. You’ve got what it takes to be successful.”

Council members Bob Hicks, Russell Bedsole, Rick Walters and Council President Scott Brakefield echoed Martin’s comments.

“I’m going to miss you as a friend. You brought so much to the city, and I wish you the best of luck,” Walters said. “I know it’s going to be good times for you moving forward.”

“I appreciate what you do, but more importantly, I appreciate who you are,” Hicks said.

Henry said he wishes the city well in the future.

“I really have enjoyed these seven years, and I just want to say thanks,” Henry said. “I hope we keep in touch, and I hope Alabaster is even better seven years from now.”
